The Premier League returns as Arsenal open the show with a London Derby tie against Crystal Palace
The great show is back and fans can’t wait for tonight as Gunners take a trip to Selhurst Park to battle Eagles in the opening game of the competition.
New names have been registered to the Arsenal squad including former Manchester City attacker, Gabriel Jesus who will be possibly making a league appearance for the North Londoners today.
Zinchenko who also made a move to Arsenal is fit for a tie today while Crystal Palace will have to do without their favorite man, Conor Gallagher who has been withheld by Chelsea.
Both Mikel Arteta and Patrick Vieira will be hoping to kick-start their season without a loss and only a draw could resolve this but it’s clear no one would sacrifice their victory to share points.
Speaking ahead of the match tonight, Vieira acknowledged the toughness Arsenal could bring; “It will be a completely different game,” he said in his pre-match press conference.
“I think with the new players they have in the squad of course they are a better team. They had really good games during the pre-season.
“I think they’re in a better place than last year. The new players they’ve brought in, they are much stronger. They have the squad to challenge and be closer to the title.
“We know that it is going to be challenging but I believe that we have the tools to make it difficult for them, to make it challenging for them. Last year at home with the support we had we had some really good matches, and it will be important to keep it that way.”
In return, here is what Arteta had to say about Crystal Palace prospects; “They showed last season how tough they are and how difficult they are to beat and how consistent they were at home as well, especially against the big teams they got some great results.
“They had that result against us and hopefully, we learnt a lot of lessons that day, especially the 30 minutes we had where we were nowhere near the standards that we needed and we paid the price for it.”
Crystal Palace vs Arsenal Injury Updates
It’s clearly not a thing of joy for players to start a campaign sidelined but some times injuries can’t be avoided as Arteta has three men doubts for tonight’s encounter.
Tomiyasu, Smith Rowe, Tierney and Vieira are all doubts for the game tonight but according to Mikel Arteta, three out of these four players have already begun training yesterday in search of fitness.
“Three out of four of those players [Tomiyasu, Smith Rowe, Tierney, Vieira] are going to be training this afternoon and if everything goes well, they will be available for selection and in the squad,” Arteta said.
“Hopefully, we can start to recover because they’ve been missing a lot of minutes and time in pre-season and they are really important players for us.”
Further stressing on Tomiyasu and Tierney injury, Arteta continued; “Hopefully not [long-term injuries], the reason they got those persistent injuries are for different reasons, probably because the squad didn’t enable them to recover, and [we] don’t play them when it was necessary and it was too tired when they weren’t fully recovered so sometimes we had to rush them. It was a combination of things with those two players, they’re so pushy and willing to contribute with the team.
“We know that with those two fit and performing at their best, we are much stronger as a team.”
Crystal Palace on the other hand are not immune to the disturbing feeling of injury as their manager confirms three stars won’t be available to face Arsenal on Friday night.
Michael Olise, James Tomkins and James McArthur are all out for tonight’s game as Vieira confirmed saying; “Macca [James McArthur] will not be a part of the squad tomorrow. Tonks [James Tomkins] has an issue with his calf so won’t get involved tomorrow. Michael [Olise] is a couple of weeks away.”
