The Argentine has disclosed his thoughts on who should be crowned Balon d’Or Winner after a very disappointing year for him
Messi believes he isn’t in place to win the Balon d’Or after a disappointing first spell at PSG.
The attacker won the last Balon d’Or award (2021) and has voiced who he believes should win this year’s.
The current Balon d’Or Champion, Lionel Messi was piped off the UEFA Champions League round of 16 by a dominant Real Madrid side.
Despite leading from the first leg, the Parisians failed to end the second leg night victorious with Karim Benzema ruling the game.
Messi believes there are no doubts Benzema is in a pole position to be crowned the winner after he dominated the Champions League and helped Madrid to the final which they won.
Speaking in an interview, Messi said; “I think there are no doubts this year.
“It is very clear that Benzema had a spectacular year and ended up victorious in the Champions League, being essential from the last 16 onwards in all the games.”
Messi had earlier stated before winning the 2021 award that Lewandowski deserved the 2020 award which was waved due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
But with Messi winning the award in the next year(2021), Bayern attacker, Lewandowski stated he was disappointed with the ruling.
Messi has come on to address the controversy saying; “Obviously he can express himself and say what he wants. I honestly don’t share what he said but I didn’t give it much importance either.
“That’s it, it stayed there and he can say what he wants and I’m not interested.
“But the words I said at that moment were from the heart and because I really felt that way.
“I said he deserved the Ballon d’Or before, because the year before I thought he was the best, but the year I won it was not the best. I just said that.”
