The Magpies failed to extend their brilliant UCL form to Dortmund as the Germans stunned St’ James Park to scare Eddie Howe

Borussia Dortmund held onto a 0-1 lead against Newcastle United to hand them their first loss in the UEFA Champions League night.

The visitors gave no space to Eddie Howe’s men who according to Kieran Tripper was ‘no where near their best.’

Felix Nmecha [23] netted the only goal of the game late in the first half and Dortmund expected a response which they came back into the second half well prepared for. However, the host couldn’t break their strong hold and hence their first loss in the campaign.

Speaking after the game, Newcastle Boss admitted that the loss isn’t just a setback but also a major blow to his team who now have just 4 points after 3 games.

“It was always going to be tight in the group,” Eddie Howe said. “Tonight was a blow for us, especially at home. We now have two really important away games coming up [in Group F].

“If either one of those late chances goes in, it’s a completely different view on the game and a result. We have to take it on the chin and focus on our next game.

“The injuries we suffered are difficult to take, but we have to adjust,” says Howe. “Every player in the squad is vitally important.”

Newcastle United will turn their attention towards their weekend Premier League fixture against Wolverhampton Wanderers on the 28th of October 2023.

The Magpies are in a brilliant form and are currently ranked 6th on the Premier League table, netting 24 goals and conceded just 9 so far.
