James Ward-Prowse is set to make an emotional return to Southampton, with the midfielder reportedly close to rejoining his boyhood club from West Ham United.

According to Ben Jacobs, Southampton have agreed a deal to sign the 31-year-old for a fee believed to be under £1 million. The move would bring Ward-Prowse back to St Mary’s just three years after his departure.

Ward-Prowse joined Southampton’s academy at the age of eight and spent two decades with the club. He made 410 senior appearances, scoring 55 goals and providing 52 assists before leaving for West Ham in 2023.

His time at West Ham has been far less settled. After initially becoming an important figure, the midfielder fell down the pecking order and subsequently spent time on loan at Nottingham Forest and Burnley.

A return to Southampton would therefore represent a significant homecoming for the former Saints captain, who remains renowned for his leadership, set-piece ability and long-standing connection with the club.

Southampton will hope Ward-Prowse can bring experience and quality to their midfield as they look to strengthen their squad.
