Manchester United Face Unexpected Problem With Bruno Fernandes As captain Struggle To Find His Form
Manchester United are facing an unexpected problem involving captain Bruno Fernandes, whose dip in form has become another concern amid the club’s difficult start to the 2026/27 season.

The Portuguese midfielder was instrumental in United’s impressive campaign last season, earning the PFA and Football Writers’ Association Player of the Year awards after registering nine goals and 21 assists in the Premier League.
However, his influence has diminished in recent weeks, raising questions about his performances and the team’s growing dependence on him.

Fernandes has reportedly been carrying an injury during the early stages of the campaign, although manager Michael Carrick has played down fears that the midfielder needs an extended spell on the sidelines.
Speaking ahead of United’s Champions League meeting with Atlético Madrid, Carrick stressed that no player was guaranteed a place in his starting lineup, insisting that performance, behaviour and commitment to the team’s standards would determine selection.

The manager was careful to clarify that his comments were not directed specifically at Fernandes. Nevertheless, the captain’s recent performances have attracted increased scrutiny as United struggle to find consistency.
The problem extends beyond the midfielder’s individual form. United have struggled to establish attacking rhythm, with their ability to create opportunities often appearing closely connected to Fernandes’ contribution. When the 32-year-old fails to influence proceedings, the team has found it difficult to produce convincing performances.

The situation was evident during Tuesday’s 2-0 Champions League defeat against Atlético Madrid. Fernandes struck the crossbar and missed another promising opportunity, while United struggled to match their opponents’ intensity and organisation.
The defeat further intensified concerns about the team’s direction under Carrick, with questions mounting over whether the squad possesses enough creativity and quality to compete consistently at the highest level.
However, placing the entire responsibility on Fernandes would overlook the wider problems affecting the team. Injuries, tactical difficulties and inconsistent performances from other players have also contributed to United’s struggles.
Fernandes remains an important figure at Old Trafford, but United must find ways to function effectively without relying excessively on their captain.
As the season progresses, Carrick faces the challenge of restoring Fernandes’ influence while building a more balanced team capable of delivering consistent results.
