Messi Returns But Inter Miami Drop Points in 2-2 Draw

Lionel Messi made his long-awaited return for Inter Miami, but the MLS side could only draw 2-2 with Columbus Crew after giving away a late lead.

The Argentina captain came off the bench in the 53rd minute, just 13 days after playing the full 120 minutes in Argentina's 1-0 extra-time defeat to Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final.

Messi received a huge welcome from the home fans and almost marked his return with a goal. Just three minutes after coming on, he met a pass from Luis Suárez inside the box, but his left-footed shot went just wide.

Inter Miami had taken the lead through Suárez, whose brilliant long-range strike beat Columbus goalkeeper Patrick Schulte. The visitors equalised after Casemiro accidentally turned the ball into his own net on his home debut for the club.

Suárez then set up Noah Allen to restore Miami's lead before half-time. However, Columbus fought back again when Brais Méndez scored from a free-kick in the 84th minute to earn his side a point.

After the match, Inter Miami coach Guillermo Hoyos praised Messi and fellow Argentina midfielder Rodrigo De Paul for returning so quickly after the World Cup.

Hoyos also defended Casemiro despite his own goal.

"He is one of the best players in the world," Hoyos said. "He gives the team balance and is a fantastic signing for us."

Messi finished the World Cup with eight goals and four assists before taking a short break. He and De Paul missed Inter Miami's last two league matches and the MLS All-Star Game before returning to training this week.

Inter Miami remain two points behind Eastern Conference leaders Nashville SC. Their attention now turns to the Leagues Cup, where they will face Atlético de San Luis before taking on Monterrey and León in the group stage.
