Paredes Hit With 10-Match Ban After World Cup Final Brawl
Leandro Paredes has been hit with a stunning 10-match international suspension after FIFA finally delivered its verdict on the explosive confrontation that followed Argentina’s defeat to Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final.

FIFA announced the sanctions this Friday, bringing a dramatic conclusion to the controversy that erupted immediately after Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 at the MetLife Stadium on July 19.

Paredes was punished for his role in the post-match ordeal, which escalated after he shoved Spain midfielder Gavi. The Argentine midfielder was also fined $90,000, making the punishment one of the most severe handed to a player for post-match misconduct.
But Paredes was not the only Argentina player to feel FIFA’s wrath.
Nahuel Molina received a seven-match international ban and a $90,000 fine, while Thiago Almada was suspended for one match and fined $30,000.

Spain’s Gavi was handed the same one-match suspension and fine for his involvement. Argentina assistant coach Roberto Ayala was also banned for three matches and fined $30,000.

The punishment goes beyond individual players. The Argentine Football Association has been fined $321,000 for multiple disciplinary breaches, while Argentina must play its next two home matches with stadium capacity restricted to 50%. Part of the sanctions has been suspended during a probationary period.
The AFA now faces the prospect of appealing FIFA’s decision, with the sanctions remaining subject to appeal.
