Argentina sent a clear message to the rest of the World Cup with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Algeria in their opening Group J match.

The defending champions arrived at the tournament carrying huge expectations, and they lived up to them thanks to another magical performance from Lionel Messi.

Messi scored all three goals as Argentina secured all three points and moved to the top of the group. Even at 39 years old, the Argentine captain once again showed why he remains one of the greatest players football has ever seen.

The performance was purely vintage Messi.

He controlled the tempo, linked play brilliantly and punished Algeria whenever space appeared. While many expected younger stars to take centre stage at this World Cup, it was the veteran captain who stole the headlines.

Argentina's display was not just about Messi.

The world champions looked organised, confident and in complete control for most of the match. Their passing was sharp, their movement was excellent and they rarely allowed Algeria opportunities to threaten their goal.

Argentina played with the calmness and maturity of a team that knows exactly what it takes to win major tournaments. There was no panic, no rush and very few mistakes.

Algeria, meanwhile, will feel disappointed by the result but not necessarily by their effort.

The African side worked hard and showed moments of quality, but they struggled to cope with Messi's brilliance and Argentina's overall quality. Against the defending champions, even small mistakes can be punished, and Algeria learned that lesson the hard way.

The positive news for Algeria is that there are still two group matches remaining. Their World Cup hopes are far from over, and a strong response in the coming games could quickly change the mood around the team.

For Argentina, this was the perfect start, but also a warning to the rest of the world to back of that trophy.

Messi may be approaching the final chapter of his career, but he has shown that he is still capable of deciding matches on football's biggest stage.
