Pape Gueye Threatens Senegal Exit In Criticism Of Coaching Staff
Pape Gueye has reportedly expressed frustration with Senegal head coach Pape Thiaw following the Teranga Lions’ dramatic 3-2 extra-time defeat to Belgium in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Round.

Reports trending on social media, claims the midfielder criticized the coach’s tactical decisions and substitutions after Senegal surrendered a 2-0 lead before losing to a controversial late penalty.
Senegal had a foot in the round of 16, as they led Belgium by 2:0 up till the 85th minutes. Romelu Lukaku fired past Mory Diaw in the 86th minute and Youri Tielemans completed the come back just before the end of the 90s to force the game into extra time.
Belgium stole her chance in the late minutes of the extra time, just before the shootouts were to commence. Bara Ndiaye had tripped Tielemans from a dangerous cross into the Senegalese 18. Referee [Hector Martinez] consulted the VAR before awarding a penalty, which Youri Tielemans converted to fire Belgium into the next round.
Gueye is said to have shared his disappointment after the game, in a strongly worded Instagram message, reflecting the mood and displeasure within the squad after the heartbreaking elimination.

“I will come back to talk about the reasons for our elimination, but today I announce that as long as this coaching staff remains in charge, I am stepping away from the national team.”
The reported comments have fueled speculation about tensions within the Senegal camp, but there has been no official confirmation of a rift between the Villarreal man and Senegalese head coach Thiaw.
A calm Pape Thiaw, had instead, focused publicly on the controversial officiating and described the defeat as “cruel,” while praising his players’ efforts despite the painful exit.
Neither Gueye nor the Senegalese Football Federation has released a detailed official statement clarifying the extent of any disagreement.
