Ronaldo Equals And Sets A New Record In The World Cups

Cristiano Ronaldo with a brace in the first half of the second group stage games, has become the first player ever to score a goal in six different World Cup campaigns, achieving this feat with at least a goal in each of 2006, 2010, 2014, 2018, 2022 and 2026 editions.

The Portuguese captain capitalised on the lay up from man in form Joao Cancelo, to fire Portugal into the leads from close range.

The opener against Uzbekistan is the 41 year old’ first in the 2026 edition of the World Cup, as he failed to find the back of the net against DR Congo in the country’s opener.

While the strike ended a ten games goalless run in major tournament for Ronaldo, it also equalled Portuguese all time goal record at the World Cup at nine goals, held by Eusebio.

It didn’t take long before PSG man, Nunes Mendes fired Portugal into a two goals lead. Ronaldo added his second and Portugal’s third for the game in the 39th minute, moments after Ganiev’ goal for Uzbekistan was cancelled after VAR review.

His second strike took him to ten goals tally in the World Cup finals, the most by any Portuguese player, after he surpassed the nine goals record held by Eusebio.

Ronaldo’ last goal in the World Cup had come against Ghana in the 2022, and has failed to find the back of the net until this game against Uzbekistan.

The five times Ballon d’Or winner had kept the record of the only player to score a goal in five different World Cup editions, but this record was equalled by Argentine Lionel Messi in the opener against Algeria.

The record for six editions is one that would last a long time with Ronaldo, as Messi had failed to score a goal at the 2010 editions played in South Africa.
