Andy Robertson Opens Up on Liverpool’s Grief After Diogo Jota’s Death

Liverpool defender Andy Robertson has opened up about the devastating impact of Diogo Jota’s death, revealing how deeply the tragedy affected the club’s squad and their relationship with football.

Robertson admitted that Liverpool’s players struggled to find meaning in football after losing their teammate and close friend, while also expressing sympathy for the players who joined the club during the summer of 2025.

“I still feel really sorry for the guys we signed in the summer of 2025,” Robertson said. “Because these guys entered a football club that was broken, they entered a squad that didn’t care about football anymore.”

The Scotland international explained that Jota was much more than a teammate to the Liverpool squad. His death left the players questioning how they could simply return to normal football activities while his family was dealing with an unimaginable loss.

“Because we just lost one of our best mates,” Robertson added.

“We thought to ourselves: ‘What’s the point? There is no point anymore. Look at what Diogo Jota’s family is going through, look at his little kids. And he was our mate, he was everything to us.’”

Robertson also revealed the heartbreaking contrast between the final happy memories he shared with Jota and the tragedy that followed.

“I was still with him a week before he died. Seeing him the happiest he has ever been [at his wedding], and a week later seeing his family being torn apart.”
