Antony's Incredible Back Tattoo Tells His Story

Antony has one of football's most personal tattoo collections, and the enormous piece covering his back tells the story of how far he has come.

The Real Betis winger has a tattoo depicting himself celebrating his dramatic winning goal for Ajax against Feyenoord in the 2022 Klassieker.

Antony scored in the 86th minute to complete Ajax's comeback in a thrilling 3-2 victory, and that celebration was later permanently inked across his back.

But the tattoo is about more than one memorable goal.

Behind the image is a representation of Inferninho, the favela in Osasco, São Paulo, where Antony grew up.

The Brazilian has previously explained that his difficult childhood is a major reason the favela features so prominently in his tattoos. He has spoken about not always having football boots, sometimes not having enough food and sleeping on a sofa because his family home did not have a bedroom for him.

In a recent interview, Antony said he still returns to the favela whenever he can because that is where he feels like the “real Antony” — away from football and the fame that came with his career.

His football journey has taken him from São Paulo to Ajax, Manchester United and now Real Betis. Betis made his move permanent after his successful loan spell, signing him until 2030.

He has also represented Brazil at the FIFA World Cup, making his tournament debut at Qatar 2022.
