Arteta Furious Over Sunderland Penalty

Mikel Arteta has criticised the decision to award Sunderland a penalty against Arsenal, describing the call as “unacceptable” after his side secured a 2–0 Premier League victory at the Stadium of Light.

Sunderland were awarded the spot-kick in the 54th minute after referee John Brooks judged Arsenal defender Ezri Konsa to have fouled Dan Ballard during a corner.

Arteta strongly disagreed with the decision and was particularly frustrated that VAR intervened.

“I’m so upset. It’s unacceptable at this level,” Arteta said after the match. “It can change a season, a championship. I watched it 10 times. It’s a judo roll. It just cannot happen.”

The Arsenal manager said he could not understand how the penalty had been awarded after reviewing the incident repeatedly.

“I cannot find a way to understand how they give a penalty in that situation, or the way that VAR has to intervene,” he said.

Arteta also questioned the potential consequences of such decisions over the course of a title race.

“I’m sad that we have to discuss in such a beautiful game something at this level that has the gravity of that, because that changes also all the course of the season and can cost you the championship,” he added.

The penalty ultimately did not cost Arsenal any points. David Raya produced a crucial save to deny Enzo Le Fée, turning the spot-kick onto the post.

Just over two minutes later, Bruno Guimarães put Arsenal ahead with a superb curling finish before Bukayo Saka added a second goal from the penalty spot later in the match.

The victory maintained Arsenal’s perfect start to the 2026/27 Premier League season, giving the defending champions four wins from four matches.

Despite the result, Arteta was clearly unhappy that the refereeing decision had become one of the main talking points.

“I want to be talking about how good we were, also how good Sunderland were, the level of the league and how beautiful this is,” he said. “We should not be talking about that penalty at all.”

Arteta also said the referee did not provide him with an explanation for the decision, adding to his frustration.

The Arsenal manager will now hope the controversy does not overshadow what was an important away victory for his side as they continue their title defence.
