Celta de Vigo Set to Rename Balaídos Stand After Iago Aspas

Celta de Vigo legend Iago Aspas is set to receive another major honour from the club, with the Tribuna stand at Balaídos set to be renamed after him.

Vigo mayor Abel Caballero announced the proposal on September 23, revealing that the stand would become the “Grada de Tribuna Iago Aspas” in recognition of the forward’s extraordinary contribution to Celta and the city.

The decision follows calls from supporters to permanently honour Aspas inside the club’s historic stadium. Tribuna was chosen because it is already operational and is expected to be the largest stand at the renovated Balaídos.

However, the renaming was not immediately formalised. Caballero said he would first seek approval from Aspas and Celta before signing the official decree confirming the change.

There had also been a separate proposal for the newly renovated Gol stand to carry Aspas’ name, adding to the confusion surrounding which section of Balaídos would ultimately be dedicated to the club icon.

In addition to the proposed stand renaming, a statue of Aspas is also planned outside Balaídos, further underlining his status as one of the defining figures in Celta’s history.

Aspas has spent the majority of his career representing Celta, becoming the club’s all-time leading scorer and one of the most celebrated players in its history.
