Stewart has been an important figure in Chelsea’s recruitment and football operations since joining the club in 2022. He initially arrived as technical director before taking on the role of co-sporting director alongside Paul Winstanley as the club continued to develop its new sporting model.

His departure represents another significant change behind the scenes at Stamford Bridge, although it is understood that Chelsea do not regard the move as a sign of major disruption within their football department.

The club’s position is that the decision forms part of an ongoing evolution of responsibilities and leadership. Stewart is expected to leave on good terms, with no suggestion that his exit has been driven by a breakdown in relations with Chelsea’s hierarchy.

Rather than immediately appointing a direct replacement, the club is expected to redistribute Stewart’s responsibilities among the existing football leadership team. The structure will continue to involve senior figures including Winstanley, Sam Jewell and Joe Shields, with recruitment and squad-building duties remaining central to the operation.

Stewart’s exit comes at a time when Chelsea are continuing to refine their long-term sporting strategy. Since the club’s ownership change, considerable resources have been invested in recruitment, scouting, analytics and the development of young players, making the structure of the football department particularly important to the club’s ambitions.

His departure will therefore attract attention, particularly given his involvement in Chelsea’s transfer planning over recent seasons.

However, the club is expected to maintain continuity rather than make wholesale changes. Chelsea believe the existing leadership team can absorb Stewart’s responsibilities while allowing the football department to move into its next phase.

For Stewart, the departure brings an end to a four-year spell at Stamford Bridge and could open the door to another senior opportunity within football, while Chelsea turn their attention towards the next stage of their sporting project.
