Chelsea’s Defensive Crisis Is Becoming Impossible to Ignore

Chelsea have plenty to smile about going forward, but defensively, the situation is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore.

The Blues have scored 10 goals in their opening four Premier League matches this season, yet they have conceded nine. More worrying still, Chelsea have failed to keep a clean sheet in 20 consecutive league matches, an unwanted run that stretches back to last season and represents their worst such sequence in 65 years.

Saturday’s 2–2 draw with Hull City perfectly illustrated the problem. Chelsea took the lead through Morgan Rogers, but defensive mistakes allowed Mohamed Belloumi to score twice and turn the game around before João Pedro rescued a point.

It was not simply a case of Hull producing moments of brilliance. Chelsea repeatedly gave their opponents opportunities through poor positioning, lapses in concentration and questionable decision-making inside their own box.

The contrast is striking. Xabi Alonso’s side possess one of the Premier League’s most dangerous attacks, with Rogers, João Pedro and Cole Palmer providing creativity and goals. But their defensive frailties continue to undermine that attacking firepower.

Chelsea have already invested heavily in rebuilding their squad, spending around £349 million during the summer while making 11 signings. Yet the biggest question remains unanswered: how does this team stop conceding?

Until Chelsea find an answer, their attacking brilliance may continue to be cancelled out by defensive chaos.
