Christian Eriksen Leaves Wolfsburg After June Collapse

Christian Eriksen has left Wolfsburg by mutual agreement, almost four months after collapsing during Denmark's friendly against Ukraine.

Wolfsburg confirmed on September 23 that the club and the Denmark midfielder had agreed to terminate his contract ahead of schedule. His deal had originally been set to expire in June 2027.

Eriksen, 34, has not played since June 7, when he collapsed after clutching his chest during Denmark's match against Ukraine in Odense.

The game was abandoned shortly after the incident, although Eriksen was able to walk from the pitch. He later said that his implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) had done what it was designed to do. He subsequently began an individual rehabilitation programme in his native Denmark.

Now, his time at Wolfsburg has come to an end.

“At the moment, it is important for me to be close to my family in Denmark. I'm pleased that we were able to find a solution together,” Eriksen said in a statement released by Wolfsburg.

Wolfsburg sporting director Dieter Hecking said the club wanted Eriksen to have freedom over the decision regarding his future and had agreed to his request to terminate the contract.

Eriksen joined Wolfsburg as a free agent in 2025 after leaving Manchester United. He made 34 appearances for the German club, registering three goals and 10 assists.

The latest development also leaves Eriksen's playing future uncertain. He has not announced his retirement, and the club's statement did not say that he had ended his career.

For now, however, the experienced midfielder is focusing on being close to his family in Denmark while continuing his recovery.
