Clearlake Takes Full Control of Chelsea

Clearlake Capital has taken full control of Chelsea after completing a deal to acquire the ownership interests of Todd Boehly and Mark Walter, bringing a major change to the club’s ownership structure.

Despite the change at the top, Chelsea are not expected to make significant changes to the way the club operates. The club has confirmed that there will be no changes to its day-to-day operations, leadership or strategy following the transition.

Boehly, who became Chelsea chairman after the consortium bought the club from Roman Abramovich in 2022, has now left his position. Walter and Jonathan Goldstein have also departed the club’s board.

There are currently no plans to appoint a new chairman, meaning the club’s existing executive and sporting leadership will remain in place.

Clearlake, which had already been Chelsea’s majority shareholder with a 61.5 per cent stake, will now own 86.5 per cent of the club following the transaction. Swiss billionaire Hansjörg Wyss will remain involved as an important stakeholder, with his holding rising from 12.8 per cent to 13.5 per cent, according to Sky Sports.

The ownership transition is therefore being presented as one of continuity rather than a change in Chelsea’s sporting direction.

Clearlake co-founders Behdad Eghbali and José E. Feliciano said the investment group intends to continue building on the strategic course established since the 2022 takeover, with continued investment in the club’s infrastructure, sporting performance and player development.

Chelsea’s broader ambition also remains unchanged. The club wants to establish itself as a consistent challenger for major honours in England and Europe, while continuing to develop its squad through a combination of young prospects and experienced players.

That approach was visible again during the summer transfer window, with Chelsea continuing to recruit young talent while also adding players capable of making an immediate contribution.

Alonso Has Clearlake's Support

The ownership change is also not expected to affect Xabi Alonso’s position.

The Spanish manager, who was appointed by Chelsea during the summer, continues to have the support of the ownership and sporting leadership. Sky Sports reports that Alonso has been happy with the working environment and that there is alignment between him and the club’s leadership over its sporting strategy.

Chelsea therefore intend to continue with the model that has been developing under Clearlake since the 2022 takeover.

The club has placed considerable emphasis on recruiting young players with long-term potential, while also looking for established talent capable of improving the team immediately.

Clearlake’s move to full control removes the previous division between the majority shareholder and the other ownership partners, but Chelsea’s stated direction remains the same.

For the club, the immediate focus will now be on delivering sporting progress under Alonso while continuing to build a squad capable of competing regularly for domestic and European trophies.
