De la Fuente Extends Spain Contract Until 2032

Luis de la Fuente has extended his contract as Spain head coach until 2032, with the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) confirming a new four-year agreement for the World Cup-winning manager.

RFEF president Rafael Louzán announced the renewal at the World Football Summit in Madrid on Wednesday, bringing an end to uncertainty over De la Fuente’s future beyond his previous contract, which was due to expire after Euro 2028.

The new agreement means De la Fuente is set to remain in charge of Spain for the 2030 World Cup, which will be hosted primarily by Spain, Portugal and Morocco. He could also lead La Roja at Euro 2032, which will be staged in Italy and Turkey.

The extension represents a significant show of confidence in De la Fuente following his success with the national team.

The 65-year-old guided Spain to the 2023 UEFA Nations League title before leading the team to Euro 2024 glory in Germany. He then added the 2026 World Cup to his list of major international honours.

Louzán praised De la Fuente’s work and said the coach deserved improved financial terms after becoming one of the most successful managers in Spanish football.

“His results speak for themselves, as does his work,” Louzán said. He added that De la Fuente had previously not been among the 10 best-paid national-team coaches but would now move into that group.

De la Fuente has been part of the Spanish federation since 2013, initially working with the youth teams before taking charge of the senior side in December 2022.

His record with Spain has been particularly notable. Before his senior-team success, he won the European Under-19 Championship in 2015 and the European Under-21 Championship in 2019, as well as a gold medal at the 2018 Mediterranean Games and a silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics.

The new contract also gives Spain continuity as the country prepares for the 2030 World Cup on home soil.

However, De la Fuente has insisted that he is not looking too far ahead. Following Spain’s World Cup triumph, he said his immediate focus was on the next international fixtures rather than thinking about the 2030 tournament.

Spain will now begin a new international cycle under the same manager, with De la Fuente remaining at the centre of the federation’s plans through the next major tournaments
