Barcelona youngster Destiny Kosiso has given Nigeria another reason to keep an eye on his development after scoring a hat-trick against Villarreal at the LaLiga FC Futures tournament in Orlando, Florida.

The 12-year-old Nigerian-eligible forward was among Barcelona's standout players as the Catalan side defeated Villarreal 4-1 in their final group-stage match. His performance helped Barcelona reach the knockout stage, while LaLiga later listed Destiny among the tournament's joint top scorers.

The LaLiga FC Futures tournament brought together 14 Under-13 teams from Europe, South America and the United States at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando. Real Betis eventually won the competition after beating River Plate 3-2 in the final.

Destiny's hat-trick against Villarreal underlined the qualities that have made him one of the more closely followed youngsters at Barcelona's academy. Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo described him as a Hispano-Nigerian forward and reported that he had already signed a sports sponsorship deal with Nike.

His goalscoring record is also striking. Pini Zahavi previously said Destiny had scored 145 goals in 52 matches during the previous season, although that figure should be treated as a reported statistic rather than an independently verified career total.

There is also a clear Nigerian connection. Destiny was born in Spain and is the son of former Nigerian footballer Ejike Paschal. His older brother Divine Ikenna Ejiofor has already represented Spain at Under-15 level, while another brother, David Obinna, also came through Barcelona's youth system.

That makes Destiny's international future one to monitor. At his age, however, there is no need to frame the situation as an immediate decision over the Super Eagles. His development is still at an extremely early stage.

For Nigeria, the sensible approach would be to keep a close relationship with the youngster and his family while monitoring his progress at Barcelona.

Could Destiny eventually become another Nigerian talent to emerge from La Masia?
