FIFA Defends Infantino Amid Growing Leadership Scrutiny

FIFA has strongly defended President Gianni Infantino amid growing criticism of his leadership and governance of world football.

In a statement issued on Saturday, August 8, FIFA said it would not support or facilitate any attempt to challenge its presidency outside the organisation’s established statutes, democratic procedures and governance framework.

The governing body insisted that Infantino was democratically elected by FIFA’s 211 member associations and continues to serve with their mandate.

FIFA also claimed there was a “concerted and ongoing effort” by some parties to undermine both the organisation and its president, while rejecting what it described as false, misleading and unsubstantiated allegations.

The statement comes during a period of significant scrutiny surrounding Infantino, particularly following the controversial FIFA Forward Enterprise proposal, which was withdrawn after opposition from several stakeholders. FIFA subsequently apologised to its member associations over the handling of the proposal.

While UEFA has publicly questioned Infantino’s leadership and maintained its concerns, Infantino has also received important backing from CAF, whose 54 member associations unanimously supported his leadership. CONMEBOL has likewise expressed support for FIFA’s position.

FIFA said it welcomes legitimate scrutiny but warned against presenting speculation as fact or using unsupported allegations to damage its leadership.

The governing body maintained that its focus remains on its 211 member associations and the continued development of football worldwide.

The latest statement further highlights the growing divide within world football over Infantino’s leadership as pressure builds ahead of the next FIFA presidential election.
