Jorge Jesus Sends Defiant Message Before Ronaldo Exit

Jorge Jesus delivered a remarkably strong message about Cristiano Ronaldo's status in the Portugal squad just hours before the five-time Ballon d'Or winner left the national team camp.

With Portugal preparing to face Denmark in the Nations League, Jesus made it clear that Ronaldo's legendary status would not give him special treatment.

“I don't have just one player. I have 23 players,” Jesus said.

The Portugal coach insisted that his priority was winning the Nations League rather than managing around one individual.

“Cristiano Ronaldo is not the main reason I'm here. Denmark is,” he added.

Jesus then addressed the issue of Ronaldo's status directly.

“Status is one thing; the rules are another.”

The 72-year-old coach explained that while Ronaldo's career deserves respect, it does not give him different rules from his teammates.

Jesus said he had already told Ronaldo that he would not play against either Norway or Denmark, explaining that the decision was based on the striker's physical condition.

He also admitted that he had considered using Ronaldo against Norway after asking him to warm up, but ultimately decided against bringing him on.

That decision clearly frustrated Ronaldo.

Jesus acknowledged that no player would be happy after warming up for 20 or 30 minutes without getting onto the pitch.

“Much less Cris, Pelé, Maradona,” he said.

But Jesus insisted that the final decision would always belong to him.

“I'm the coach, and he is a player,” he said.

He also made perhaps his strongest declaration when asked whether Ronaldo could influence his thinking.

“Ronaldo should never change my ideas,” Jesus said, adding that even the president could not dictate his footballing decisions.

The timing of those comments proved extraordinary.

Shortly afterwards, Ronaldo left Portugal's training camp following a conversation with Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença.

Ronaldo confirmed his departure in a statement, saying he would reveal the reasons behind his decision “in due time.”

Jesus insists there was no major rift and maintains that the decision was based on his footballing plan and Ronaldo's physical condition.
