Manchester City have completely rebuilt the heart of their midfield over the last two summers, marking one of the biggest transformations at the Etihad in recent years.

The change comes as City move into a new era following the end of Pep Guardiola’s reign as manager. After years of dominance under Guardiola, the club are now building a midfield designed to carry Manchester City into their next chapter.

The new faces include Elliot Anderson, Rayan Cherki and Ayyoub Bouaddi — three players who represent a clear shift in the club’s approach.

Anderson brings energy, physicality and tremendous work rate. Cherki provides creativity, technical quality and the ability to unlock defences, while Bouaddi offers youthful intelligence and composure in the middle of the pitch.

The transformation is about more than simply replacing outgoing players. Manchester City have changed the profile of their midfield, bringing in players with a combination of youth, versatility and long-term potential.

For much of the Guardiola era, City’s midfield was built around legendary figures such as Kevin De Bruyne, Ilkay Gündogan and Rodri. They dictated the tempo, controlled possession and helped establish City as one of the greatest sides of the modern era.

Now, that generation is being replaced.

With Guardiola no longer on the touchline, City are entering a new tactical and sporting era. The midfield will be central to defining what comes next.

The expectations remain enormous, but the message is clear: Manchester City are rebuilding from the middle — and a new generation is ready to take centre stage at the Etihad.
