Kylian Mbappé’s growing public campaign for the 2026 Ballon d’Or is reportedly having an unexpected effect on his chances of winning the prestigious individual award.

According to French journalist Romain Molina, the Real Madrid forward’s intense media activity surrounding the Ballon d’Or is doing “more negative than positive” for his candidacy.

Mbappé has been increasingly vocal about his ambitions to win the award, discussing his individual performances, career targets and the possibility of joining the likes of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo among the players to reach historic milestones.

The France captain has also made it clear that winning the Ballon d’Or remains one of his major personal objectives, particularly after another high-profile period at club and international level.

However, Molina claims that the frequency of the discussion around Mbappé’s candidacy could be working against him, suggesting that the forward’s media campaign may be creating a different perception among those following the race.

The Ballon d’Or voting will ultimately determine the winner, with individual performances, statistics, trophies and influence during the voting period all forming part of the wider discussion.

Molina’s comments are an assessment of the current Ballon d’Or narrative and are not an official statement from France Football or the award organisers. Mbappé’s campaign will continue to attract attention as the announcement of the winner approaches.
