Wayne Rooney: “I Wouldn’t Feel Comfortable Accepting” 2011/12 Premier League Medal

Wayne Rooney has revealed that he would not want to receive a 2011/12 Premier League winners’ medal if Manchester City are eventually stripped of the title following the outcome of their financial case.

Rooney, who was part of the Manchester United side that finished runners-up to City in one of the most dramatic title races in Premier League history, believes United did not do enough to deserve the championship despite City potentially losing the title.

“I wouldn’t really feel comfortable accepting another Premier League medal, if I’m being honest,” Rooney said.

“I don’t think we deserve it. We didn’t do enough that season to win the league. We were six or seven points clear with four or five games to go and we threw it away.”

City famously secured the title on the final day of the season, with Sergio Agüero scoring a stoppage-time winner against Queens Park Rangers to snatch the championship from United on goal difference.

Rooney also expressed sympathy for the City players who could potentially lose their medals, arguing that players should not necessarily be punished for decisions made by the club’s ownership.

“If the City players had no understanding of what was going on above them and their medals were taken away, I would be absolutely devastated if that happened to me,” he added.

“I’m happy with the five I’ve won. I wouldn’t want this one.”

While Rooney acknowledged that City could potentially be stripped of the title depending on the outcome of the case, he maintained that he would personally have no desire to inherit the championship.

“Should they get it stripped for what the owners have done? Yeah, maybe. But I wouldn’t feel comfortable accepting it.”
