Joao Pedro Makes His Case as Chelsea's Main Striker

Joao Pedro gave Chelsea fans plenty to celebrate after scoring a hat-trick in a 6-4 win over Western Sydney Wanderers in Xabi Alonso's first game as head coach.

According to BBC Sport, the Brazilian needed just nine minutes to complete his hat-trick. After missing out on Brazil's World Cup squad, he responded in the best possible way by showing his finishing, pace and strength.

Alonso was full of praise for the striker after the match.

"He is very, very hungry," the Chelsea manager said. "He is determined to have a great season."

Joao Pedro's performance has already started a debate about Chelsea's attack. He looked sharp from start to finish and strengthened his claim to become the club's first-choice striker this season.

There was another positive for Chelsea as 17-year-old Dastan Satpaev scored the first goal of Alonso's reign with an excellent finish. The young Kazakhstan forward is still officially a trialist because he cannot complete his move from FC Kairat until 12 August, but he made a big impression.

It was a different story for Liam Delap.

The £30 million signing from Ipswich struggled again and could not make the most of another chance. According to BBC Sport, Chelsea are now advancing talks to sign experienced striker Danny Welbeck from Brighton, while Delap's future has become uncertain.

Chelsea are also discussing a move for midfielder Jordan Henderson as Alonso looks to add more experience and leadership to his squad.

The scoreline looked exciting, but Chelsea still showed defensive problems and signs of rust after their long trip. Even so, the biggest winner was Joao Pedro.

If he keeps playing like this, it will be very difficult for anyone to take the number nine shirt away from him.
