United States head coach has defended striker following his controversial red card, insisting the dismissal was harsh and that there was no malicious intent behind the incident.
Speaking after the match, Pochettino argued that Balogun's challenge was simply an unfortunate accident that occurs in football and should never have resulted in a sending-off.
"Watching it after on TV, it was never the intention to step onto the player; it's a normal action in football that happens by accident."
The former Chelsea and Tottenham manager was emphatic in his assessment of the decision, adding:
"It's never intentional. It's never a red card."
Pochettino also voiced his frustration with the officiating throughout the contest, suggesting that key decisions consistently went against his side.
"Today, in all the 50-50 decisions, none were for us. And the players reacted very well. We controlled that emotional part of the game that's so important."
Despite playing under difficult circumstances after the dismissal, the USMNT boss praised his players for maintaining their composure and discipline rather than allowing emotions to take over.
"How they managed the situation was amazing; we showed maturity."
The comments underline Pochettino's belief that Balogun was unfairly punished and highlight his satisfaction with his team's response to adversity. While the red card will remain a talking point among supporters and pundits, the manager's stance is clear: the incident was accidental, undeserving of a dismissal, and his players deserved credit for the professionalism they displayed in handling the situation.
