Under FIFA’s Club Protection Programme, football’s governing body is expected to cover approximately 80% of Ugarte’s salary while he remains unavailable through injury. The scheme compensates clubs when players suffer injuries on international duty, helping to offset wage costs during lengthy recovery periods.

Ugarte sustained a serious knee injury while representing Uruguay at the World Cup, forcing him into a prolonged spell on the sidelines. Although the injury is a major setback for both player and club, the FIFA compensation will ease part of the financial burden on Manchester United as the midfielder undergoes rehabilitation.

The Club Protection Programme was introduced to safeguard clubs that release players for international competitions, ensuring they are not left to shoulder the full financial impact when a player is injured while representing his country.

Compensation is calculated based on the player’s salary and the duration of the injury, subject to the programme’s limits. For Manchester United manager Michael Carrick, the focus remains on replacing one of his most industrious midfielders.

Ugarte’s aggressive ball-winning ability, relentless pressing and defensive discipline had made him an integral part of the squad, leaving the club with a difficult task as preparations for the new campaign continue.

Medical staff are expected to monitor the Uruguay international’s recovery closely, with no definitive return date yet confirmed. The club is expected to proceed cautiously to ensure the midfielder makes a full recovery before returning to competitive action.

While United will undoubtedly miss Ugarte’s presence on the pitch, FIFA’s intervention through the Club Protection Programme provides welcome financial relief, allowing the club to concentrate on strengthening the squad and maintaining their ambitions for the season ahead without bearing the full cost of the midfielder’s absence.
