Real Madrid and Man United Miss Messi Cup Line-Up

Lionel Messi's Messi Cup is returning for its second edition, and several major European academies will be missing from the tournament.

The 2026 Messi Cup will take place in Miami from October 25 to November 1, with the competition expanding from eight teams in its inaugural edition to 16 U-16 academies this year.

The confirmed participants include Inter Miami, Barcelona, Manchester City, Chelsea, Arsenal, Atlético Madrid, Inter Milan, Benfica, Ajax, River Plate, Boca Juniors, Palmeiras, Flamengo, Newell's Old Boys, Independiente del Valle and UE Cornellà.

That list contains several of the biggest names in world football, but there are also some notable absentees.

Real Madrid, Manchester United, Juventus, Sporting CP and Al-Nassr are not among the 16 academies announced for this year's tournament.

Their absence is likely to catch the attention of football fans, particularly given the strength of some of the academies that have been selected.

Barcelona, Manchester City, Chelsea, Arsenal, Atlético Madrid, Inter Milan and Ajax are all represented, while South American heavyweights such as River Plate, Boca Juniors, Palmeiras and Flamengo will also take part.

However, there is no official indication that the clubs left out were rejected by Messi or that they were specifically excluded by the tournament organisers. The official announcement simply confirms the 16 participating academies.

Messi said the tournament was created to give young players a unique experience while helping them understand what it means to compete at the highest international level. He also welcomed the expansion from eight to 16 teams.

Inter Miami CF Stadium will serve as the main venue, with additional matches taking place at the Florida Blue Training Center in Fort Lauderdale.

With some of the world's most recognised academies involved, the second Messi Cup will give fans an early look at players who could eventually reach the senior game.

And while Real Madrid, Manchester United, Juventus, Sporting and Al-Nassr will not be represented, there is no evidence that their absence carries any message beyond the confirmed tournament line-up.
