Kylian Mbappe Replies Ousmane Dembele's Defense Demand
Kylian Mbappé has opened up on how he aims to contribute defensively to France's World Cup campaign after Dembele called on his teammates to do more defensively

Following Ousmane Dembélé’s remarks about France's need for a greater defensive work rate from their forwards, captain Kylian Mbappé has stepped forward to warmly embrace the challenge.
Kylian Mbappé has recently shown true leadership by backing up his teammate Ousmane Dembélé, insisting he is fully prepared to increase his defensive work rate to help France reclaim the World Cup.
The conversation surrounding France’s tactical balance opened up earlier in the week when Dembélé spoke candidly to L’Équipe about what it takes to survive the grueling tournament. Highlighting the collective effort required, Dembélé subtly nudged the frontline to chip in more off the ball.
"We have immense talent upfront, but modern football doesn't allow anyone to just stand and watch," Dembélé remarked to L’Équipe.
"If we want to win the World Cup, our attackers—every single one of us—must be the first line of defense. We need to run more, press harder, and help the midfield."
Given the deep, long-standing friendship between the two players, there was no locker-room drama or friction when these comments were brought up to the forward.
Instead, during a an interview with Le Parisien, the Real Madrid superstar completely validated Dembélé’s perspective, displaying a mature, team-first mentality.
"I have to step up defensively," Mbappé told Le Parisien.
"It's important for the team, and I HAVE to do it. It will start in THIS World Cup, because we want to WIN it.”
Mbappé’s response marks a significant and mature evolution in his game. In past tournaments, the talisman was often intentionally spared from heavy tracking back to keep his legs fresh for devastating counter-attacks.
However, with a grueling 48-team tournament ahead, Mbappé's readiness to get his hands dirty shows just how unified the squad is.
Rather than a disagreement, this highlights the perfect harmony between France’s key leaders. With both Dembélé and Mbappé completely on the same page, Les Bleus are looking like an unbreakable unit.
France will kick off their World Cup campaign in Group I African powerhouses Senegal in a highly anticipated opening match on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, at the iconic MetLife Stadium, at 8:00 PM WAT.
