Ivory Coast made a dream start to their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign with a dramatic 1-0 victory over Ecuador, courtesy of a stoppage-time winner from Manchester United Star Amad Diallo in a fiercely contested Group E encounter.

For much of the match, the two sides appeared destined to share the points. Ecuador showcased the defensive solidity that made them one of the toughest teams to break down during the South American qualifiers, while Ivory Coast matched their opponents with energy, intensity, and attacking intent. The contest remained finely balanced throughout, with both teams creating opportunities but failing to find the decisive touch. Ecuador came agonizingly close on multiple occasions, forcing the Ivorian Shot Stopper and threatening to snatch all three points themselves

The Elephants, however, refused to settle for a draw. Backed by a passionate crowd and inspired by their attacking talent, they continued to push forward deep into added time. Their persistence was rewarded when a late attacking move finally unlocked the Ecuadorian defence, producing a dramatic stoppage-time winner that sent the Ivory Coast bench and supporters into wild celebrations.

The victory gives Ivory Coast a crucial early advantage in Group E, where Germany had earlier announced themselves with an emphatic 7-1 victory over Curaçao.

Beyond the three points, the result serves as a statement of intent from the African side. Having arrived at the tournament in excellent form and carrying hopes of reaching the knockout stages, Ivory Coast demonstrated not only quality but also resilience and belief when it mattered most.

For Ecuador, the defeat will be a bitter pill to swallow after a disciplined performance that looked set to earn a valuable point. Nevertheless, they remain firmly in contention and will now turn their attention to the remaining group fixtures.
