Marsch Celebrates Canada’s History-Makers Following World Cup Triumph
SoFi Stadium, Inglewood went agog in the late minutes of additional time of the first round of 32 games between South Africa and Canada in the 2026 edition of the World Cup.

Stephen Eustáquio’s late strike had sent Canada into the round of 16s, the nation’s first knock out win in the history competition. This is Canada’s third World Cup campaign, and the Les Rouges never made it past the group stage in their previous two outings.
“You guys are Canadian heroes today!” Marsch charged at the players, he had assembled them right on the pitch, while the stadium buzzed in excitement among Canadian fans.

“Canadian heroes for the future children of this country who play this sport. The sport has a big future because of you guys. You should be so proud of who you are. You should be so proud of this game. You never lost belief. You went after it, point after point, moment after moment. You are Canadian heroes!”

Canada coach Jesse Marsch said his team had chances throughout the match but didn’t take much of it, in his words he said the Canadian side were not "lethal enough" before goal.
The first half of the game was quite intense, a cagey first half with limited chances created by both nation, as each was playing in the knockout rounds for the first time.
The win against South Africa sends Canada to the next round , where the Les Rouges will face either the Netherlands or Morocco on July 4 in Houston for a place in the quarter-finals.
