The Netherlands were left frustrated after throwing away the lead twice in a 2-2 draw against Japan in their opening Group F match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Dutch took the lead early in the second half when captain Virgil van Dijk scored with a powerful header. However, Japan responded almost immediately through Keito Nakamura to make it 1-1.

The Netherlands then regained the advantage when Crysencio Summerville curled a brilliant shot into the corner of the net. At 2-1, it looked like Ronald Koeman's side were on course for all three points.

But Japan refused to give up and continued to push forward. Their pressure paid off in the 88th minute when Daichi Kamada scored from a corner to rescue a point for the Asian side.

According to pre-match comments reported by Tribuna, Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman had spoken about the expectations on his team and their desire to make a deep run in the tournament. That made the result even more disappointing for the Dutch camp.

While Koeman avoided making excuses, many observers felt his team became too cautious after taking the lead. Japan grew stronger as the game progressed and were rewarded for their persistence late in the match.

For Japan, the draw felt like a victory. For the Netherlands, it felt like two valuable points had slipped from their grasp. The result leaves Group F wide open and raises early questions about whether the Dutch can manage games better when holding a lead.
