France may have the most valuable squad at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but history shows that squad value and depth alone does not win trophies.
According to figures published by El Confidencial, France top the list with a squad value of €1.52 billion. England are second with €1.36 billion, while Spain sit third at €1.22 billion. Portugal and Germany complete the top five with values of €1 billion and €947 million respectively.
The numbers show the incredible talent available to these nations. France boast stars such as Kylian Mbappe, Michael Olise and Desiri Doue while England have Jude Bellingham, Bukayo Saka and Phil Foden. Spain continue to rely on a new generation led by Lamine Yamal and Pedri, while Portugal have a mix of youth and experience. Germany, meanwhile, remain one of the most respected tournament teams in world football.
However, the biggest question is simple.
Which of these teams is actually most likely to win the World Cup?
On paper, France appear to have the strongest case. They have world-class players in almost every position, experience in major tournaments and a squad capable of changing games in an instant. Many fans see Didier Deschamps' side as the team to beat.
England are not far behind. Their squad is packed with talent, but critics will point out that England have often arrived at tournaments with high expectations only to fall short when the pressure is greatest.
Spain may be the dark horse among the favourites. Their young squad has energy, quality and fearlessness. If players like Yamal continue to shine, Spain could surprise many people.
Some sides see Portugal as big prospects due to their staggeringly outstanding midfield filled with quality. Also due to the controversial Messi-Ronaldo debate, with Ronaldo fans yearning to see him lift this trophy
Germany should never be ignored, as they have started the world cup on a dangerous aura demolishing Curacao 7 goals to 1.
If they continue with this form, they may also be the team fit to lift the trophy.
