Infantino Fires Back at World Cup Critics
FIFA president Gianni Infantino has hit back at critics of the 2026 World Cup, insisting the tournament has achieved far more than many people are willing to admit

According to FIFA, Infantino said those spreading "hatred and false rumours" are ignoring the work being done behind the scenes to organise the biggest tournament in football.
"While you sit on the sidelines, we at FIFA are on the front line, organising, working hard and delivering the greatest show on Earth," he said.
One line from his statement has already divided opinion.
"While you divide, we unite."

Infantino also defended FIFA's role beyond football, claiming the organisation worked to bring together "two countries at war" during the tournament.
He dismissed criticism over visa issues, saying too much attention was placed on a small number of cases.
"You mentioned the fact that a few people did not receive visas while ignoring the millions of others who did," he said.
The FIFA president also addressed complaints about refereeing decisions.
He argued that controversial calls and decisions not to suspend players happen in many of the world's biggest leagues and should not be treated as something unique to the World Cup.
His comments have sparked debate across football.
Supporters believe Infantino is right to defend a tournament that has attracted millions of fans and delivered memorable matches.
Critics, however, argue that pointing to the tournament's success does not erase concerns over officiating, organisation and other controversial issues raised throughout the competition.

With the World Cup final still to come, Infantino's statement has added another talking point to a tournament that has already produced plenty of drama on and off the pitch. According to FIFA, the focus should remain on football rather than what it describes as "false rumours."
