Manchester United are accelerating plans to strengthen their midfield further this summer, with the club now prioritising the signing of a specialist defensive midfielder following the arrivals of Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos.

The Red Devils have already invested heavily in the middle of the park. Tielemans completed a £35 million move from Aston Villa on a five-year contract, while Brazilian midfielder Andrey Santos arrived from Chelsea in a deal worth around £50 million. Despite those additions, United’s recruitment team believes another holding midfielder is needed to provide greater balance and defensive stability in Michael Carrick’s evolving system.

One of the names firmly on United’s shortlist is Roma midfielder Manu Koné. According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United have already made contact with the French international’s representatives as they assess the possibility of a move. However, no formal bid has been submitted, and Koné is understood to be one of several midfielders currently being evaluated by the club.

The 25-year-old joined Roma from Borussia Mönchengladbach in 2024 and has quickly established himself as one of Serie A’s most dynamic midfielders. Known for his ball-winning ability, athleticism and progressive ball carrying, Koné fits the profile United are seeking as they look to add more defensive security in front of their back four.

Reports suggest Roma would demand around €60 million before considering a sale. While United are monitoring the situation closely, the club are expected to weigh up several options before deciding whether to proceed with an official offer.

Carrick’s rebuild has focused on creating a younger, more energetic midfield capable of controlling matches both in and out of possession. Tielemans brings Premier League experience and creativity, while Andrey Santos adds energy and technical quality. The addition of a natural defensive midfielder would complete what has become one of United’s biggest priorities this summer.

Last season, Koné made more than 40 appearances across all competitions for Roma, underlining his importance to the Italian club. His ability to recover possession, break opposition lines with his passing and carry the ball through midfield has made him one of the most highly rated defensive midfielders in Serie A.

With pre-season preparations continuing, United remain active in the transfer market and are expected to make further additions before the transfer window closes. A defensive midfielder remains one of the club’s key priorities, and while Manu Koné is among the leading candidates, Manchester United are carefully assessing their options before making their next move.

The midfield rebuild may not be complete just yet, but United’s intentions are becoming increasingly clear as Carrick continues shaping his squad ahead of the new season.
