Chelsea sign Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace in £52m deal

Chelsea have completed the signing of France defender Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace in a deal worth £52 million.

The 26-year-old centre-back has signed a contract that will keep him at Stamford Bridge until 2032, becoming one of Chelsea's biggest additions ahead of the new Premier League season.

Lacroix joined Crystal Palace from Bundesliga side Wolfsburg in 2024 for an initial £15.5m and quickly established himself as a key player under Oliver Glasner.

Last season, he made 55 appearances in all competitions and helped Palace win the UEFA Conference League, the club's first major European trophy.

The defender also featured three times for France at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, including the third-place play-off against England, as Les Bleus finished fourth.

Speaking after completing the move, Lacroix said he is excited to begin a new chapter with Chelsea.

"I feel like we have a story to write here, and I can be part of it," he said. "I'm really proud and really happy to join this project."

Lacroix becomes Chelsea's third signing of the summer after the arrivals of Morgan Rogers and Marco Palestra. Geovany Quenda and Emmanuel Emegha also officially joined the club this month after agreements were reached in 2025.

According to reports, Chelsea remain in talks over possible moves for Brighton striker Danny Welbeck and Brentford midfielder Jordan Henderson as Xabi Alonso continues to reshape his squad.

The signing also signals a change in Chelsea's transfer strategy.

Since taking over the club, the current ownership has focused on signing young players with long-term potential. Lacroix, however, arrives as an experienced defender who is expected to make an immediate impact.

Chelsea also explored a move for Granit Xhaka earlier this summer, further suggesting the club is now looking to add proven leaders alongside its talented young squad.

After finishing 10th in the Premier League last season without winning a trophy, Chelsea hope Lacroix's arrival will strengthen a defence that struggled for consistency and help the club return to competing for major honours.
