FIFA Comes After Argentina After World Cup Final Chaos

Argentina could face serious punishment after FIFA opened disciplinary proceedings over the team's behaviour during and after the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The biggest flashpoint came after Argentina's 1-0 defeat to Spain in the World Cup final. According to FIFA, several Argentina players and members of the coaching staff were involved in confrontations with Spain players after the final whistle.

FIFA has now appointed a disciplinary prosecutor to investigate the incidents.

Defenders Nahuel Molina and Leandro Paredes, along with Argentina assistant coach Roberto Ayala, are being investigated over allegations of assault under FIFA's disciplinary code.

Molina is also accused of unsporting behaviour. Argentina midfielder Thiago Almada and Spain star Gavi are also being investigated for alleged unsporting conduct.

If found guilty, the consequences could be severe. FIFA rules allow a minimum one-match suspension for unsporting behaviour and at least a three-match ban for assault.

But the investigation does not stop there.

The Argentine Football Association is also facing several disciplinary charges over incidents throughout the tournament. These include alleged team misconduct, using football matches for political demonstrations, discriminatory or racist behaviour, and failures relating to order and security inside stadiums.

FIFA is also examining reports of discriminatory chants, offensive gestures, delayed kick-offs, inappropriate banners and spectators throwing objects during Argentina matches.

One of the most controversial moments came after Argentina defeated England in the semi-finals.

Players celebrated with a banner reading "Las Malvinas son Argentinas" ("The Falklands are Argentine"), a political message linked to the long-running territorial dispute between Argentina and the United Kingdom.

That celebration has now become part of FIFA's wider investigation.

The case has sparked fierce debate. Some fans believe FIFA is protecting the image of the game by cracking down on repeated misconduct. Others argue football should not be used to settle political disputes and that players crossed the line during the tournament.

For now, no punishments have been announced. FIFA will review the evidence before deciding whether the players, officials and the Argentine Football Association will face suspensions, fines or other disciplinary action.
