The Ukrainian winger is now free to return to football after his doping ban has been resolved, and the reason behind the decision will leave many fans asking one question: was he judged too quickly?

According to statements released by the FA and Chelsea, changes to World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) testing standards meant Mudryk's sample would not have been reported as a positive test if it had been analysed under today's scientific requirements.

That changes the conversation completely.

Mudryk accepted the anti-doping rule violations, but the governing bodies have acknowledged that modern testing standards would not have produced the same outcome. After serving almost two years out of football, he is now eligible to play immediately.

Chelsea welcomed the decision and said they are ready to help the 25-year-old rebuild his career.

The Blues spent £88 million to sign Mudryk from Shakhtar Donetsk in 2023. Before his suspension, he made 73 appearances and scored nine goals, but many supporters had already written him off.

Now those same fans may have to rethink their opinions.

During his suspension, Mudryk stayed fit with personal trainers and even spent time working in a London charity shop while waiting for his appeal to be resolved.

His return also gives new Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso another attacking option ahead of the new season.

The biggest debate is no longer whether Mudryk deserves another chance. It is whether football's anti-doping system failed him.

If today's testing standards say his sample would not even trigger a case, should he have lost two years of his career?

Chelsea believed in him when many did not. Now Mudryk has the chance to prove that the club's patience was justified and silence every critic on the pitch.
