Frenkie de Jong Hits Back at Critics: "Many People Watch Football But Don't Understand It"
Frenkie de Jong has delivered a passionate defence of his playing style, insisting many football fans misunderstand the role of a midfielder. The Netherlands star also welcomed Virgil van Dijk's public backing after years of criticism over his performances.

Frenkie de Jong has firmly responded to the criticism that has followed him throughout his career, arguing that many people who watch football fail to understand what happens beyond the highlights.
The Barcelona and Netherlands midfielder addressed one of the most common complaints about his game, the perception that he does not play enough forward or defence splitting passes. According to De Jong, such criticism ignores the tactical reality of elite football.
"Let me tell you this, a lot of people that watch football don't understand football. So they watch it, but they don't understand it," De Jong said.
The Dutch international explained that every pass depends on multiple factors, including teammates' movement, opposition positioning and the overall structure of the game.
"I hear people say, 'He doesn't give any deep passes.' Well then you are not watching the game. Do you want me to pass it with the goalkeeper most likely collecting it? It depends on the run, on the positioning, on so many things. Maybe I should sit next to the people who shout this and explain it to them."
De Jong has long been regarded by coaches and teammates as one of Europe's most intelligent midfielders. Rather than forcing risky passes, his role often revolves around controlling possession, progressing the ball through pressure and dictating the tempo of matches. These qualities are less eye catching than goals or assists but are crucial to how both Barcelona and the Netherlands build attacks.
The 28 year old also expressed his appreciation for Virgil van Dijk, who recently defended him against criticism while describing him as one of the best midfielders in world football.
"Well, that's nice to hear," De Jong said when asked about the his teammate and captain's comments.
Van Dijk's support reflects a view widely shared within football. Former managers Erik ten Hag, Ronald Koeman and Xavi Hernández have all praised De Jong's ability to control games, escape pressure and link defence with attack. His composure on the ball and tactical intelligence have made him a cornerstone for both club and country.
While debates over his style are unlikely to disappear, De Jong's message is clear. Football is about decision making as much as execution, and the best option is not always the most spectacular one. For the Dutch midfielder, understanding the game means looking beyond the obvious.
