Courtois Plans One-Year Belgium Pause, Sets Sights On Euro 2028 Return
Thibaut Courtois has announced his intention to take a one-year break from international football after Belgium's FIFA World Cup campaign, saying he hopes to return in time to help the Red Devils qualify for UEFA Euro 2028.

The veteran goalkeeper, who has been one of Belgium's most influential players for more than a decade, believes stepping away from national-team duties will allow him to recover physically and mentally after several demanding seasons at club and international level.
The shot stopper spoke after Belgium's World Cup exit, outlining his plans for the coming years. "I want to rest for one year without Belgium matches and return in the Euro 2028 qualifiers and the tournament."
The Real Madrid shot-stopper acknowledged that the proposal will ultimately depend on the Belgian Football Association and the national team's coaching staff, but stressed that the break is aimed at extending his career rather than bringing it to an early end.
Courtois' announcement came after Belgium's quarter-final defeat to Spain, which ended their hopes of winning the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The 34-year-old was visibly emotional after the match, reflecting on another major tournament that went the drain, despite the team's high spirit through the campaign.

If his request is accepted, Courtois would miss Belgium's international fixtures over the next year before making himself available again for the build-up to Euro 2028.
The Madrid man has experience, leadership and pedigree proven at the highest level which would remain a valuable asset for Belgium as they prepare for a new era.
Courtois is widely regarded as one of the world's finest goalkeepers, he has enjoyed a decorated career with club and country, winning major honours while establishing himself as a cornerstone of Belgium's golden generation.
Although he is planning a temporary international hiatus, his message makes it clear that retirement is not on his mind; rather, the Belgian captain is determined to return refreshed and help his nation compete for European glory in 2028.
